Fertility preservation offers hope to people who plan to undergo medical treatments or procedures that may impact their fertility.

Whenever it comes to planning for the future, we believe it’s important to empower people with knowledge so that they can make informed decisions.

This blog will cover the importance of fertility preservations, what options are available, and how these options can impact your future.

What is fertility preservation, and why is it important?

Fertility preservation refers to various procedures that aim to help people maintain the ability to have biological children in the future.

These types of procedures are common for people who may be facing treatments that could affect someone’s ability to have kids in the future.

Common situations that may lead to someone pursuing fertility preservation include cancer treatments, gender-affirming surgeries, and other medical interventions.

Sometimes, life throws us a curveball, and fertility preservation helps people have more power to decide what their future family plans are.

What fertility preservation options are there?

Egg freezing and sperm freezing are the most common ways to preserve fertility.

Egg freezing is a carefully managed process that is often successful, particularly for suitable candidates, and sperm freezing is a dependable method with high success rates as well.

What is egg freezing?

During the egg-freezing process, individuals undergo hormonal stimulation through self-administered injections to encourage the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.

During this phase, doctors keep an eye on how the follicles in the ovaries are growing using blood tests and ultrasound scans. When the eggs are ready, they’re gently collected in a simple surgery. After that, the mature eggs are quickly frozen to keep them safe. This process, called vitrification, helps maintain their quality until they’re needed.

What is sperm freezing?

Sperm freezing involves collecting and preserving sperm for future use.

Typically, individuals provide a sperm sample through ejaculation, which is then processed and prepared for freezing.

Before freezing, the sperm sample undergoes evaluation to assess its quality and concentration.

Once deemed suitable, the sperm is mixed with a special solution to protect it during freezing, and then cooled to very low temperatures to preserve the sperm’s viability.

These frozen sperm samples can be stored indefinitely until needed for fertility treatment.

What to expect if you pursue fertility preservation?

If you plan to pursue fertility preservation, you should anticipate an initial consultation with a healthcare provider where you will learn more about what is involved in the procedure. This consultation would cover medical protocols, costs, and what you need to do to prepare.
